This book has an interesting premise. It was published in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War resulted in a catastrophic result for France. The book then proceeds to tell the story of a Prussian invasion of England in which the British are soundly defeated and their way of life is totally changed. The author attributes this defeat to the complete inadequacy of the British armed forces at the time to meet potential military action throughout their empire. As he points out, Britain had troops in Canada and India to defend its interests there but they were shorthanded in Britain itself. When the author points out that Britain was reduced to issuing the same flintlock rifles used in the American Revolution to meet the Prussian invasion his point is made. To truly appreciate this book requires a basic knowledge of the events of the time. The American Civil War had concluded six years before. The Union Army had almost THREE MILLION soldiers serve over the course of the war. This was absolutely incredible to the European military establishment. The French chose to ignore this as an aberration and the Prussians did not. Modern warfare had total changed, the small professional armies days were over. The Union Army transported troops and supplies by rail. employed railway guns, and used cavalry as mounted infantry. This book was a call to action for the British military establishment.Product details

Interesting reading Took a little bit to get into it after that it was interesting
A well written tale of complacency and disaster from 1871 still has relevance today. Our freedom and independence must never be taken for granted. Fascinating little book.
Articulate satire with chilling foresight disguised as memoire. Will the West, especially the United States, pay attention? I really fear they won't.
Apparently upon the strength of this story, the British restructured their military organization. Making the story historically significant.
I decided to read this book because it is a very early example of all the alt-history stories that are a dime a dozen nowadays.
It was a decent story and near the end something happened that made me realize I had become invested in the story.
The author's style is a bit rough (40 pages ,1 paragraph). But it was pretty readable; much more than some of the other 1800's literature.
It took no time at all to read (~1 hour) and was worth the time spent.
If you're into books and the development of different genres, it's a slam dunk to read it
This is the first time I have read what is called the “invasion genre” and it's actually the first book written in the genre. In this story Chesney describes England as being invaded and conquered by a foreign power. The Sun has not just set on the British Empire it's totally sunk starting with the Navy. With it's military stretched too far there is little hope of any success when she declares war. Written in 1871 it was bound to lift more than a few eyebrows.
In the years before the first world war, there was a vogue for fictional imaginings of how a foreign enemy, better prepared and less complacent, could overrun England. This is an early example, probably inspired by the ease with which Prussia had just defeated Austria and France.
This parallels the Cold War literature in the US regarding conflicts with communist countries.
They are interesting period pieces. This one imagines the war in terms of the Napoleanic or Crimean wars, without imagining the industrial mass slaughter that modern weaponry would wreak. It is intended as a warning, and nowadays it is a curiosity, worth reading because it is quite short--it gives the reader a taste of ther genre without taking too much time.
